Alden Mason Foundation Award: Honoring a Legacy

The Alden Mason Foundation is thrilled to announce the inaugural Alden Mason Foundation Award, which will provide $12,000 to a Washington painter of exceptional merit. In addition to the monetary award of $12,000, the Foundation will also honor two eligible applicants with a Special Recognition Award of $1,000 each.

Eligible applicants must be:

More than 18 years of age; reside full-time in Washington state throughout the award period (1/31/24 – 12/31/25); not enrolled in a matriculated program during the award period; and an active visual artist, working in the medium of painting.

SELECTION PROCESS

The Selection Panelists will review all eligible applications. The Selection Panel consists of: Jose Carlos Diaz, Deputy Director for Art, Seattle Art Museum; Shamim M. Momin, Director of Curatorial Affairs, Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington; Anthony White, Artist and Curator. Their evaluation will be based on the stated Selection Criteria. This panel will make the selection of the Fellowship Grand Prize Award and the two Special Recognition Award recipients. The Foundation’s Board of Directors will utilize the panelists recommendations to honor each awardee selected.

The most competitive applicants will be active visual artists who have created an outstanding and distinguished body of work in the medium of painting as demonstrated in the work samples provided.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Artist Résumé

Please provide a one (1) to two (2) page résumé. This document will be for administrative purposes only. The Selection Panel will not have access to this information. The panel will be asked to make their selections based on the work samples provided and the brief Artist Statement.

Artist Statement

Please provide a concise, clear Artist Statement for the Selection Panel. The document should give deeper insight into your work and be 150 words or less.

Applicants MUST submit at least five (5) work samples and no more than ten (10) work samples in the accepted formats. Applicants MAY submit one work sample in video format (3 minutes or less).

HOW TO APPLY
Applications for the 2024 Alden Mason Foundation Award will open on December 3, 2023. The deadline is January 31, 2024. The application will be available at https://amf.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/76063/hiY2CPvkkA. There is no application fee. All entries must be submitted online. Entries sent by standard mail will not be accepted.
